"Linguistics"

Whenever I tell someone I study linguistics, there is generally some hesitation before they say “Oh, you must speak a lot of languages.”

It seems not too many people know what linguistics is all about, so I just thought I’d throw a definition on here.
linguistics |lɪŋˈgwɪstɪks|
plural noun [treated as sing. ]
the scientific study of language and its structure, including the study of morphology, syntax, phonetics, and semantics. Specific branches of linguistics include sociolinguistics, dialectology, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, historical-comparative linguistics, and applied linguistics.
(New Oxford American Dictionary - On my Mac)

Well, that definition only gets you so far if the subfields are all new terms too. If you happen upon my blog and you would like to know more about linguistics, or my research, contact me at umhaimes at cc dot umanitoba dot ca.
